A family friend has been diagnosed with breast cancer-the kind that mamograms do not detect. She will undergoe a double mastectomy with reconstruction on Aug. 7th. As a nurse, I have met many people who have battled this disease. My heart and my prayers go out to our friend. And how timely for me to receive my October issue of American Patchwork and Quilting in the mail today. The very first page is titled, Get Involved! The magazine is sponsor for The Quilt Pink project. Over 4000 quilts were made last year and continue to be auctioned on ebay, with the proceeds all going to breast cancer research at the Susan G. Komen foundation. The current auctions run through October 2007. The next Quilt Pink project kicks off with a Quilt Pink Weekend, scheduled for Sept. 21-23, 2007.
http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/ has the details and how you can get involved. Be sure to visit the site for more info, ideas and heartwarming stories of how people have made a difference in the lives of others, and how we can battle this disease one quilt at a time.
Those of us who quilt have an amazing gift. I've come to realize that I can not take this gift for granted. What seems simple and comes easily to me, may be far beyond the reach of someone else.
